SINGLE(mom)HOPE Daily Devotional

Day Fifteen
Fretting Causes Harm

What are your hot buttons? How do you react to your buttons being pushed? We all have buttons and we all react to our buttons being pushed. As a believer first and a single mom, letting go of your anger is imperative to the growth of your own spiritual health and the emotional health of your home.

Your past could be what pushes your buttons. It could be your present circumstances that poke at those buttons. People are guaranteed to push your buttons. Whatever pushes your buttons or whoever pushes your buttons, your reaction is very important. Often the single mom finds herself on the roller coaster of emotions that can easily end in fretting. It is easy to fret. Fretting delivers a luring invitation, but beware.

Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; do not fret – it only causes harm.
Psalm 37:8

Fretting is harmful because it leads you down an emotional destructive path. Anger does need to be processed and it does serve a purpose. Anger is a real feeling, and it must be handled with care. When you are controlled by your anger and then turn to fretting, which means to kindle your anger, you begin to be harmed and harm relationships.

Find an outlet to begin to process your anger: a counselor, a trusted friend that is grounded in scripture, focus on being grateful, exercise, laugh, and begin to have the courage to let go.
