Day 17
Fixed on You

I played basketball during my high school years. There were times when the coach would prepare the team for our opponent and the best defense would be “Man on Man”. I remember being told by the coach, “Stay fixed on your man” (in my case girl). He would say, wherever she goes, you go. If she runs into the stands you go with her; no matter what stay fixed on her.

You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you! Isaiah 26:3

As a single mom, your thoughts can run away from you so easily. The overwhelmed emotions you can feel can hijack your thoughts. Peace is so wonderful and can seem an experience seldom known. What if peace can be experienced as a result of fixing your thoughts on Christ? I am still learning this. What I have learned is that my thoughts can gently lead my emotions when my thoughts are fixed on Christ. Focusing on His promises, His provisions, His goodness, His love, His mercy, His faithfulness, His kindness, His joy, His power, and so much more will settle your anxious heart and bring peace.

Whatever circumstances stare you in the face, will you take the time to fix your thoughts on Christ? Will you allow who He is wash over your soul? Will you rest in Him? Dear single mom, your circumstances may not change the way you desperately desire in the timing you would prefer. Your circumstances could make a complete turnaround and the relief you crave happens. I don’t know what your needs are or when you need things to take place, or what your heart desires. I only know this, the way to experience peace deep within is to fix your thoughts on Him.

Day Sixteen
The Importance of Following

One of the best ways to lead your family is to follow. It is easy to get caught up in all the ways we are succeeding or failing in leading our family. As a single mom, you know all those in your household are looking to you and needing you to get it right. Let’s be honest, with all the responsibility and pressure to lead. It’s easy to lose your joy.

When you follow someone else, there’s less pressure. The leader is the one making the decisions. When you follow someone else, there’s more enjoyment. The leader is the one who is the most focused. When you follow someone else, there’s a simple trust. The leader is the one taking all the “first steps”.

Joyful are people of integrity, who follow the instructions of the LORD.
Psalms 119:1

One of my greatest desires, when I lived the single mom life, was to live a life of integrity. This verse in Psalms gives one of the greatest benefits of the life lived with integrity and what those do to live that life. The single mom who chooses Psalms 119:1 as her motto is wise. You will lead your family well because you are following the instructions of the One who will never lead your heart astray. Ultimately, you will be joyful. There will be tired days full of disappointment and trials. There will be hard days filled with heartaches and questions. For the single mom who follows the instructions of her LORD, He will show you the next step on your most difficult days and give joy that cannot be explained. He will mark your life with integrity and give you strength to lead your family.

Are there areas where you are not following His instructions? When you follow Him, what joys do you discover? How do you lead your family better when you are following?
